One thing I forgot to say about the documentary panel I went to at the forum that I thought was really important, and relates to Sicko:
documentary success is measured by the number of people seen, working films thinks it should be changed to the number of people who take action as a result of seeing the film.
How would the making and showing of documentary films change if we shifted the measure of success?
I am planning a film and discussion series, the second one I’ve done in 3 years outside of the academic world. The basic format is film intro by student discussant and filmmaker (when we can get them), film viewing, point-counterpoint reactions, quickie presentations by related activist organizations, and then informal, family style meal to continue the discussion, pamphlets on the way out. It has been very successful.
This year I think we will start with that question of measure.
